The path to a consequential COP30 in Belém, Brazil, is being paved now. June 12th 2025, in Abu Dhabi, I had the honor of moderating a vital climate dialogue, co-hosted by the German Embassy and the European Union Delegation. The room was united by a clear sense of urgency and a shared question: how do we turn high-level climate promises into tangible, on-the-ground action?

The discussions, featuring ambassadors, CEOs, and youth leaders, revolved around several non-negotiable truths.
The Unavoidable Context for COP30
The dialogue was grounded in stark realities and powerful commitments:
- The Science is Unflinching: With 2024 confirmed as the hottest year on record, the data leaves no room for delay.
- 1.5°C is Not Negotiable: As emphasized by H.E. Siddiq Faizal Riyad Koya, Fiji Ambassador to the UAE, this target is a lifeline, not a talking point.
- The Impacts are Here: Discussions highlighted the tangible effects of climate destruction and the EU’s strategic response to the green transition.
- Finance is the Linchpin: H.E. Majid Al Suwaidi, Altérra CEO & ex-COP28 DG, stressed that private capital is essential to scaling solutions.
- Justice and Youth are Central: The conversation wove together the imperative of climate justice with the undeniable leadership of youth voices who are not waiting for permission to act.
The Essential Shift: From “What” to “How”
Synthesizing these insights, my key takeaways and calls to action for COP30 are clear. The era of setting goals is over; the era of execution must begin.
- Align Policy with Science: Political frameworks must be accountable to scientific data. There can be no gap between what the science demands and what policies deliver.
- Execute with Precision: The focus must shift from the “what” to the “how.” We need clear, funded implementation roadmaps for every major commitment.
- Educate to Activate: Knowledge is the foundation of action. We must invest in climate education to build a global constituency that understands and demands change.
- Prioritize Adaptation: Adapting to our changing climate is no longer optional; it is a critical pillar of resilience, especially for the most vulnerable nations.
- Price Carbon Effectively: Putting a true cost on carbon is one of the most powerful levers to drive the market transition towards a low-carbon economy.
Conclusion: The Choice Before Belém
COP30 will be a test of global resolve. It will reveal whether the world can finally match its words with the scale of action required.
As I concluded the session, “The path to Belém is not just about negotiations, it is about survival, justice, and the future we choose. The data is clear. The solutions exist. What we need now is the political will to act and to act together.”
A sincere thank you to all the speakers, organizers, and participants who made this dialogue so impactful. The momentum from Abu Dhabi must now carry forward. All eyes are on Belém.
